Alvin Rostberg Obituary

Alvin W. Rostberg, age 82, of rural Henderson died on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 11 a.m. from St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Township.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday at the Kolden Funeral Home in LeSueur and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday.

Alvin was born in 1936 in Manannah Township, MN, to Carl and Virginia Rostberg.  He attended schools in Grove City, Litchfield and St. James and graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1954.  After graduation he attended Wahpeton State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND.  He worked at various printing shops and newspapers including the Kerkhoven Banner and the Springfield Advance Press.  Later he moved to Alaska and worked at the Anchorage Daily News. In 1956 he enrolled at the University of Minnesota, majoring in journalism. While attending the U of M he met Diane Capistrant and they married in 1960. Soon after marriage, Alvin whisked his beautiful new bride off to Gila Bend, AZ, (much to her parent's dismay) where he took a job as editor of the Gila Bend Herald.  Returning to Bloomington, MN, in 1962 Al worked for Jones Press in Minneapolis and Sun Suburban newspapers. In December of 1962 he started working at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and worked there until April of 1999.  Al was a 40 year member of the ITU Printer's Union and spent several years farming in both Winsted and Henderson. For many years Alvin and Diane spent the winters in Texas.  Al enjoyed walking, biking, swimming, dancing, skiing, and the occasional yoga class.  He was also fond of traveling, reading, working around the farm and attending his grandchildren's numerous events.  Alvin never shied away from adventure, and refused to turn down a free seed corn cap.  But most of all Alvin loved people, fellowship and spirited conversation. He is survived by his wife, Diane, sons Eric (Carol) and Tony (Amy) Rostberg and daughter Danielle (Jerry) Buesgens, sisters Carol (Tim) Johnson, Becky Moyer, Madrene (Scott) Grund, Jennifer Werkman, Hope Rostberg and brother Terry Lipsit, 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grand children.
