Kevin O'Brien Obituary

Kevin P. O’Brien, age 87 of Belle Plaine, died on Saturday morning, July 20, 2019 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, July 25, 2019, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church, Belle Plaine, MN.  Visitation will be at the Kolden Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 24, starting at 4:00 p.m. and concluding at 8:00 p.m. with a Veterans Prayer Service.   Visitation will continue on Thursday morning at the church from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.  There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at the Church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.  Burial with military honors will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Belle Plaine, MN.  Fr. Roger Hessian will officiate the services. 

Kevin was born on March 11, 1932 in Belle Plaine Township, Scott County, MN to John and Catherine (Shea)  O’Brien.  He grew up on the family farm and attended country school and graduated from Belle Plaine High School.  He entered the United States Army in 1954 and married Marilyn Butler on February 19, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Belle Plaine, MN.  The couple lived in San Antonio, Texas for a short time before Kevin completed his military duties in 1956.  He then received his technical training in sheet & metal work from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis while working various jobs.  After completing his apprenticeship he entered a long working partnership with his brother Francis for over 40 years with O’Brien Plumbing and Heating.  Kevin was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing playing cards and his time with the grandchildren.  He boxed in the Golden Gloves, played amateur baseball until he turned 39 and was always an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his children; Janis (Les) Buesgens of Belle Plaine, MN; Kevin (Suzanne) O’Brien of Shakopee, MN; Mark (Mary) O’Brien of Monticello, MN; Jeffery O’Brien and his special friend Barb Bigaouette of Belle Plaine, MN; Michael (Jessica) O’Brien of Canton, GA; Nancy O’Brien of North Mankato, MN; Robert (Joan) O’Brien of Shakopee, MN and Dennis (Denise) O’Brien of Shakopee, MN.  22 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.  Siblings; Tom O’Brien of Belle Plaine, MN; Mary Catherine Buley of North Mankato, MN; Geraldine Latterell of St. Cloud, MN; Kieran (Diane) O’Brien of Eden Praire, MN; Joe (Bernice) O’Brien of Jordan, MN and Colleen (Gene) Sathre of Honolulu, Hawaii.  Sisters-in-law; Linda O’Brien of Le Sueur, MN; Mary Jane O’Brien of Belle Plaine, MN and Carol Butler of Chisago City, MN.   Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn in 2005; Siblings, Mary Therese O’Brien, Francis O’Brien, William O’Brien, Gerald O’Brien, Jack O’Brien, Donald O’Brien, Finton O’Brien, parents and many other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank the wonderful and loving care givers at Kingsway Assisted Living, the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home and St. Croix Hospice.  Memorials are preferred.
