March 14, 2018, Barbara Alice (Shaykett) Kiewel passed away peacefully at Friendship Manor in Shakopee, MN. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11a.m. on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at St. John's Lutheran Church, 148 S. Chestnut Street, Belle Plaine. Pastor Mark Johnson will preside. Barbara will be honored with a time for gathering one hour prior to service at church. The pallbearers will be her grandchildren; Christopher Kiewel, Nathan Kiewel, Shawn Kiewel, Brenda Dittrich, Matthew Larsen, Rachel Szybnski, Patricia Kiewel, Claire Rohweder, Suzanne Thompson, Jennifer Swanson, Eryn Smith and Celeste Grimm. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Memorials can be made to Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, 800 E. 28th St. Minneapolis, MN 55407, which is a longtime favorite charity in gratitude for the assistance they provided to her son, Harold. Born April 21, 1927, Barbara was the seventh of eight children born to Ralph and Clara Shaykett on their ranch in Butte County, So. Dakota. She grew up a cow-girl, even riding a horse to attend grade school in a one room school house, and then moved to live with her older sister to attend and graduate from Belle Fourche High School. Barbara graduated with a home economics degree from South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. Barbara met her husband, Robert B Kiewel, on the dance floor in Deadwood, SD. They were married on July 24, 1949 in Belle Fourche, SD and danced every chance they could over the next 53 years. They lived in Butte County as their family grew to three boys. When the second son developed polio, they moved their growing family to a small farm near Jordan, MN to be close to the Shriner's Hospital in Minneapolis. Three more children, 2 girls and a boy were born while in Minnesota. In 1969 they moved to Belle Plaine. Barbara was a life long member and 40 year leader of 4-H. As a club member she wrote a South Dakota Weed Identification book. She became a We Do It club leader while her children were members and then became the Chicken Lady (the Poultry Superintendent) for the Scott County Fair.. She taught in public school, in Sunday School, as an interpreter at Murphy's Landing, and as a child care provider in her home. She loved singing, dancing, gardening, and sewing. Barbara is survived by her brother, Ralph E (Bud) Shaykett of Whitewood, SD and sister-in-law Loraine Kiewel of Akron, IA; sons, Larry (Marcia) Kiewel of Belle Plaine; Harold (Patricia) Kiewel of San Diego, CA; Russell Kiewel of Stewart, MN; and Martin (Doreen) Kiewel of Birmingham, AL; and daughters, Karen (Gail) Seaver of Lindstrom, MN; and Marge (Joel) Larsen of New Prague, MN, foreign exchange student, Carsten Skude; and by 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Barbara was welcomed into heaven by her husband, Robert; parents, Ralph and Clara; sisters and brothers, Margaret (Maurice) Truman, Minor (Wauneta) Shaykett, Dorine (Earl) Gaver, Alice Shaykett, Bill (Mildred) Shaykett, Edna (Mel) Kuether and Chuck (Dorothy) Shaykett; and daughters-in-law Julie, Elizabeth, and Beverly.
