Bettyann Volek

January 27, 1932 — April 24, 2019

Belle Plaine

Betty Volek, age 87, of Belle Plaine, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine with a one hour prior visitation to service time at the church.  Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Belle Plaine.  Luncheon will follow the burial at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine.

Bettyann Elsie Bandy was born January 27, 1932 to parents, Thomas and Elsie (Telthoester) Bandy, at the family farm in Sand Creek Township, rural Jordan, where she enjoyed growing up with her younger brother, Clyde.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and attended Dooleyville Country School.  On October 14, 1950 she married Robert Emil Volek of Columbus, Wisconsin at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Jordan.  They lived in the Jordan area before moving to Belle Plaine in 1954 where they raised their three sons.  Betty worked at Anderson Drug in Belle Plaine for 20 years and then for The Lutheran Home Association for 19 years until her retirement at age 74.

Betty loved the outdoors where she helped with the family farm as a child and enjoyed the animals and pets she cared for.  Later her outdoor interests included flower and vegetable gardening, camping and fishing and meticulously tending her lawn. In recent years she found enjoyment through Bible Study group and the Women’s Card Club.   She was a faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church where she served on the Hospitality Serving Team for many years. Betty was an excellent cook and homemaker, and she spent countless hours crocheting afghans, embroidering dishtowels and painting.  Her love of sports was fueled by years of watching her sons’ athletic events.  If the Vikings, Twins or Timberwolves were playing, she was tuned in.  Always, her favorite time was spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her three sons; Leon (Gloria), Bruce (Susan) and Steven (Cindi), all of Belle Plaine and eight grandchildren; Sara (Max) Addler, Brooks (Angela) Swenson, Kristin (Matt) Stier, Nick (Caycie) Volek,  Andrea (Andy) Mesch, Adam Volek, Alyssa (Brandon) Leistiko, and Erin (Scott) Neufeld; 18 great-grandchildren; Will, Greyson and Tate Addler, Kamryn and Kolin Stier, Ayden and Ansley Volek,  Hannah Swenson, Presley and Mila Volek, Dustin, Lily and Landon Leistiko, Teagan, Jaxson and Marcus Mesch, and Blake and Paige Neufeld; her brother Clyde Bandy of Jordan, and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Robert, on August 24, 2006.
