Clarence Scharpe

Clarence Scharpe entered eternal rest on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Arlington Good Samaritan Center at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 27 days. Blessed be his memory. Funeral Service will be at 11a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, at Zion Lutheran in Arlington. Rev. Deborah Dawson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4-7p.m. on Monday at Zion Lutheran and continue one hour prior to the service at church on Tuesday morning. Interment will be in the Glencoe City Cemetery in Glencoe, Minnesota. Clarence Edward Hilmar Scharpe was born on June 9, 1924 in New Auburn Twp, Minnesota. He was the son of Gustav and "Minnie" (Alsleben) Scharpe. Clarence was baptized into Christ on July 6, 1924 by Pastor Diemer at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Auburn. He was confirmed in the Christian faith on April 2, 1939 by Pastor Werner at Immanuel Lutheran Church, New Auburn. On March 4, 1945, Clarence was united in marriage to Iona Bulau at Zion Lutheran Church, New Auburn Twp. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Donald, James, Neil, Steven, Kathleen, and Jane. Clarence and Iona farmed in New Auburn Twp in Sibley County until 1977 when they moved to a hobby farm just west of Arlington. In spring of 2000, they moved into a twin home in Arlington. On May 7, 2014 Clarence entered the Arlington Good Samaritan Center. Clarence enjoyed woodworking and helping his son and son-in-law with field work. He was always willing to do odd jobs for his children. Clarence also helped cut up meat at the Arlington Market. Clarence & Iona spend many weekends at their cabin on Clearwater Lake near Annandale. He enjoyed listening to old time music and playing rummy with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clarence was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Arlington, serving as treasurer and trustee for many years. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, Gustav and Minnie Scharpe; son, Donald Scharpe; Sisters and brothers-in-law, Frieda Scharpe, Gertrude and Frank Ellig, Alma and Harold Grack, Irene and Helmuth Hoops, Meta Frauendienst; Brothers and sisters-in-law, Herbert and Clara Scharpe; Ernest and Iona Scharpe, Willard and Lillian Scharpe, Leslie and Dorothy Scharpe; Brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Roy and Lorenda Bulau; Ellsworth Henke. Clarence is survived by his wife of 71 years, Iona Scharpe; Sons and daughters-in-law, James and Myrna Scharpe of Arlington, MN, Neil and Jo Lynne Scharpe of Minot, ND, Steven and Cindy Scharpe of Green Isle, MN; Daughters and son-in-law, Kathleen and Brian Oelfke of Hamburg, MN, Jane Scharpe and Dave Breyer of Green Isle, MN; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; Brother-in-law, Martin Frauendienst; sister-in-law, Lucille Henke.
