Clinton Carl Westphal, age 87, of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 28, 2026. A memorial service will take place on Friday, July 10th 2026 at Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine at 11a.m. with a visitation starting one hour prior to the service. Internment with military honors will be at Oakwood cemetery. A luncheon will follow interment at the Belle Plaine Vet’s Club.
Clinton was born on March 28, 1939 to Carl and Louise (Krug) Westphal in Belle Plaine Township. He was inducted into the US Army as a General Warehouseman assigned to Ft. Lewis, Washington in 1958 at the age of 18. He served 6 years in the Army, 3 years active duty and 3 years in reserves. He worked in a warehouse in the South of France for at least one of those years. When he returned home he worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad for many years. He then worked at Soft Soap, Wal-Mart, and finally at Mystic Lake until his retirement.
On October 3, 1964, Clinton married Phyllis Bird at St John’s Lutheran Church in Arlington Township. Together, they had three children. Clinton and Phyllis were married for over 35 years before her passing on February 2, 2000.
In his younger years Clinton enjoyed fishing and playing with the grandkids. After retirement he enjoyed driving around town on his golf cart.
Clinton is survived by his three children, Craig (Laura) Westphal of New Prague, Sherry (Paul) Guertin of Belle Plaine, and Sheila Westphal (Bill Bielen) of Madison Lake;
Grandchildren, Sarah and Mary Westphal, Courtney and Danny Guertin, Brandon and Ambrielle Westphal; great-grandchildren, Louise, Eleanor, Josephine, and Declan Guertin; siblings Orin Westphal and Myrna Westphal; sisters-in-law; Gloria (Roger) Hilgers, Judy Madden, Carol (Ron)Otto; good friends, Diane Woestehoff and Roger (Rooster) Thomason
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Louise Westphal; his Wife, Phyllis Westphal; mother and father-in-law, Henry (Hank) and Helena Bird; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy Westphal, Lois Schauer, Carl Bird, Deb Mathwig, and Milan Bird.
