Donald J. Schmit

October 16, 1923 — April 1, 2015

Donald Julian Schmit, 91, went to heaven to join his parents, sister, brother-in-law and brother on April 1, 2015. Don "Uncle Bud" was born October 16, 1923 in LeSueur, MN to Matthew and Delphina Ososki Schmit. Don grew up in LeSueur and attended St. Anne's Elementary school through the 8th grade. Don lived in Crosby, MN with his parents from the late 1940's to the mid-70's when they moved back to LeSueur. After his mother's passing in 1982, Don moved to Waseca, MN where he spent the rest of his years. Throughout his life Don had a number of jobs including carpet laying and janitorial work which he did well into his 80's. There was nothing he liked better than going over to the Elm Homes Central Office to work and especially to have doughnuts with the office staff on Friday afternoons. And if there was a dance, he was there. He loved to polka and in later years he was even known to dance while seated in a wheelchair. Fishing, visiting with family and friends, bowling, dancing, playing cards and participating in Special Olympics were the highlights of Don's life. He was a very social man with an incredible memory and an infectious sense of humor who loved to tease and never knew a stranger. Even when the years started to slow him down, he just kept moving forward with no complaints; his family and friends referred to him as the "Come-Back Kid". For many years he was the focus of family reunions and get-togethers and never wanted to miss anything. Don's passing will leave a huge whole in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to have known him. And we are all better because of his influence. Don was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister, Geraldine Stults, brother-in-law, R.W. Stults, and a brother, Wilford, who died in infancy. He is survived by his three nephews, Terry Stults (Yvonne), Waupaca, WI, Mark Stults (Kay Cox), Spearfish, SD and Alan Stults (Clara), Norwalk, IA, seven great nephews and nieces and 12 great-great nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind to mourn his beloved caregivers and housemates at Elm Homes in Waseca, MN, as well as all of the staff affiliated with Elm Homes and his many friends in the community. Arrangements are being handled by Kolden Funeral Services of LeSueur, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 11:00 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 111 4th S. NW, in Waseca, MN with visitation one hour prior. A lunch reception will be held following the funeral. Interment will take place at St. Anne's Cemetery in LeSueur, MN. A memorial has been established and condolences may be sent to 3715 Old Belle Rd., Spearfish, SD, 57783.
