Frieda was born in Kermit, North Dakota on September 29, 1919 to Henry and Amalia (Trebelhorn) Roth. She was the 5th child born of 14 children. She was baptized at home. She was confirmed at Mountville Lutheran Church of Sibley County where she attended school there throughout the 8th grade after the family moved from North Dakota to the Gaylord, Mn area. She married Harry H. Laabs on May 12, 1942 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Arlington. They farmed a few years near Henderson and then moved into the city of Arlington where they remained all their married life. Her husband had an excavation business for several years and Frieda managed the Laundry service at the Arlington Municipal Hospital a few years. Frieda was an excellent cook and baker and hosted many meals for family and friends most weekends. She also loved to sew and much of her own clothing along with her 2 daughter's clothes and many friends. She crocheted, made many beautiful quilts, and did embroidery along with gorgeous candle wicking artistry. She loved to garden and flowers were a passion of hers. She did a lot of canning and freezing of foods for all of her many delicious meals. Frieda was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She and her husband loved to go dancing and liked old time music. They also liked to travel. When grandchildren arrived she was always happy to help out and baby-sit when needed. Sadly, she didn't get to know her only great granddaughter, Gracie Panning.
