George Herrmann, age 79 of BellePlaine, died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at St. Gertrudes Nursing Home in Shakopee. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 25 at St. John Lutheran Church in BellePlaine. Rev. Mark Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 24, with a 7:30 p.m. Veterans Service Firemen's Service at Kolden Funeral Home in BellePlaineand also one hour prior to service time at church. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in BellePlaine. George was born on September 10, 1934 to George and Lydia (Koepp) Herrmann on a farm near Arlington. He graduated from BellePlaineHigh School in 1953.He excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a nine time letter winner and Homecoming King. He married Elizabeth Liz Haas on June 9, 1956 at St. John Lutheran Church in BellePlaine, (where he was also baptized and confirmed). He entered the United States Army in 1957 serving in Germany. After his honorable discharge in 1959 he returned home where he worked as a signalman with Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 31years.After retiring from the railroad, he purchased an Oil Distribution Business (Herrmann Oil) which he owned for 10 years. George was also a long time member of the BellePlaineFire Dept. He spent his later years putting his handyman skills to good use, helping his children build their homes. He also enjoyed golfing and making fishing memories with grandkids. George is survived by his wife Liz; children, Dan (Anne) Herrmann of BellePlaineand Kathy (Joe) Hartmann of BellePlaine; grandchildren, Wyatt, Vivian, Walker Herrmann and Jake Hartmann; sister in law, Anne Herrmann and nieces and nephews. He is preceded indeath by his parents; brothers, Herald, Louis andErvie. He is also preceded by his grandson, Connor Hartmann in 2002.
