Harold Robert William Engelmann

Harold Robert William Engelmann, age 82 of Arlington, passed away January 26, 2014 at the Ridgeview Sibley Medical Center in Arlington. Funeral service will be 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29 at Zion Lutheran Church in Arlington. Rev. James Carlson will officiate. Visitation will be two hours prior to service time at the church. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in New Auburn Twp. Harold was born on August 9, 1931 to Robert and Anna (Kamps) Engelmann on the family farm near Plato, MN. In 1932 Robert and Anna purchased a farm near Green Isle, MN. He was baptized at Freiden's Country Line Church and later confirmed at St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Hamburg, MN. He attended a one room country school and graduated from Central High School in 1949. He played football in high school and after talked about breaking his leg during a game. Harold honorably served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1954. He was stationed at Ft. Leonardwood, MO and served in Korea and Japan. Upon his return to the United States he farmed with his father and later attended McConnell Travel School in Minneapolis for a program in airline baggage handling. In November of 1958 he met Florence Baumgartner who he would marry on May 2, 1959 in Aitkin, MN. From 1960 to 1962 they lived in Franklin Park, IL. He worked as a baggage handler at O'Hare Airport for American Airlines. In September of 1962 Harold and Florence moved back to Green Isle to help on the family farm. On August 11, 1966 Harold sustained a traumatic brain injury in a farming accident. Harold spent a number of months at the University of Minnesota Hospital and had to re-learn many basic life skills. He farmed with his father for the next 10 years, and 10 years after that at Bongards Creamery. By this time his disability was catching up with him. He also worked at MRCI in New Ulm for 10 years. In 1998 Harold entered assisted living in Watertown, MN, then the Arlington Good Samaritan Center and finally Oak Terrace Nursing Home in Gaylord, MN Harold is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa (Ted) Bertrand of Hopkins, MN, Janet (Terry) Deno of Arlington and Denise Harris of Arlington; grandchildren, Alexis Deno (Kyle Schilling), Kevin (Apryl) Deno, Miranda Harris (Dan Hagfors) and Scott Deno; great-grandson, Hunter Deno; sister and brother-in-law, Lois (Gordon) Panning; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arvid (Carol) Baumgartner, Carol Baumgartner and Glendon (Marvel) Baumgartner and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Anna; wife, Florence; parents-in-law, Albert and Palma Baumgartner and his brother-in-law, Alvin Baumgartner.
