Harry Baynes

Harrison (Harry) P. Baynes, age 88 of Henderson died on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Arlington, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, August 5, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Church in Le Sueur. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Sueur with Military Honors. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4-8 p.m. at the Kolden Funeral Home in Le Sueur concluding with an 8:00 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue on Friday morning at the funeral home from 7:00-9:45 a.m. Harry was born on April 6, 1923 to Matt and Rose (Tarpy) Baynes. His formal education was spotty because he had to help feed the family, completing only the 3rd grade. He taught himself to read and write. At age 12 he was pulled out of school entirely to be rented out to a local farmer. At age 14 he lied about his age and joined the CC's at Jordan, MN. By age 15 he was working at the Green Giant Company in Le Sueur. At age 18 he joined the United States Navy two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He worked as a Bosen Mate on a Troop Supply Ship in the European/No. African Theater until July of 1945 when he received a medical discharge. He was the first graduating class from Mankato Vocational School (now South Central Community College), with certificate in auto mechanics. He worked for Beutz Construction, Le Sueur Sheet Metal, Upstrom, Teeter and O'Brien Plumbing & Heating before becoming self-employed in Plumbing & Heating in 1970. Harry enjoyed watching baseball, reading newspapers, fishing, camping, wild animal watching and talking about World War II. He has been a member of the American Legion Post 74 in Henderson for 66 years. Harry married Annette Griep on Dec. 31, 1945. Together they had 7 children. Ann (Paul) Kvasnicka of Mesa, AZ, Pat (Kathy) Baynes of Annandale, MN, Paulette Leffluer of Naples, FL, Mary (Wayne) Kendall of Garden City, MN, Peg (Doug) Verschelde of New Ulm, MN, Jean Baynes of Carborro, NC and Barb Baynes of Mankato, MN. 24 Grandchildren and 31 Great-Grandchildren. Two brothers: Bob (Betty) Baynes of Florida & Jack (Jean) Baynes of Springfield, MN. Two sisters: Betty Thomas and Rosemary (Les) Trimbo of Henderson, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lee and Tom Baynes. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Anne's Catholic Church and School in Le Sueur and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Henderson, MN.
