Hillard W. Alsleben, age 87 of Green Isle, died on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the Minneapolis Veterans Home. Funeral services will be on Monday, December 26, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Green Isle, MN. Visitation will be at the church on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Following the service at 1:00 p.m. there will be a lunch in the Church social hall followed by the burial at High Island Cemetery in New Auburn at 3:30 p.m. with Military Honors. Hillard was born on April 20, 1929 in New Auburn, MN to Henry & Alvina (Tietz) Alsleben. He was said to be small at birth that he fit into a shoebox but he proved not as fragile as he appeared. He was baptized on May 12, 1929. He lost his mother at the age of ten and his father never remarried. He spent his young years in the home of his Uncle Herman and Aunt Minnie Alsleben. Their grandson, Orville, turned out to be his best friend for life. He was confirmed on April 18, 1943 and received his education at the Metcalf School in New Auburn. Hillard served in the U.S. Army. He loved to dance and one night a girl caught his eye. He waited for her date to leave her side and he made his move. He asked Clarice Fisher to dance and the rest was history. They were married on October 23, 1954. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Hillard's interest included baseball, fishing, hunting, bowling, playing cards and making sausage from his secret recipe, but his greatest love was his family. He devoted much of his time and energy as the welcoming smile at the Alsleben household in Green Isle. Living by the foundation that a life filled with love is found in the desire and commitment to being the source of love. He is survived by his wife Clarice; Children; Kathy (George) Lenz of Chaska, MN; Mark Alsleben of Green Isle, MN; Lana (John) Woehler of Arlington, MN; Penny (Greg) Kube of Norwood/Young America and Clark (Beth) Alsleben of New Auburn, MN. 13 Grandchildren and 12 Great-Grandchildren. Many In-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
