James A. Straining, age 80 of Belle Plaine, died at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home on Monday morning, January 2, 2017, due to complications of Parkinson's disease. A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, MN. Visitation will be at the funeral home 1 hour prior to the service. Jim was born on June 5, 1936 to Albert & Jane (DeWalt) Straining in Harrisburg, PA. He attended and graduated from William Penn High School in Harrisburg in 1954 where he was very active in athletics. He married Karen Shadel on Oct. 22, 1955 in Harrisburg, PA. Jim was a 30 year employee of 3M and the family lived in New Jersey, Georgia and Wisconsin before settling in Minnesota. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Jim was an avid fisherman and had a lifelong passion for Drum & Bugle Corps. He loved music of all kinds, playing board games, puzzles and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Karen; Daughters; Kristen Straining and husband Ron Hamrick of Baldwin, WI; Lisa (Bob) Tesch of Richfield, MN and Andrea (Darren) DeJoy of Montgomery, MN. Grandchildren, Zachary, Jeremy, Hannah and Sarah DeJoy and seven Great-Grandchildren. Brother, Jerry Straining of Dillsburg, PA; Brother-in-law and niece of Harrisburg, PA, Donald and Terri Straw; Sister-in-law of Wilmington, DE, Kathie Kolb and family, niece and nephew Sheryl and Alan DeWalt.
