Jean Stringer, of Burnsville, formerly of Belle Plaine, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Community Assisted Living in Shakopee. Funeral Service will be at 11a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2015 at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Rev. Diane Goulson will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church on Monday morning. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Jean Emily (Smith) Stringer was born on March 24, 1925 in Madelia, Minnesota to Walter David and Mabel (Andrews) Smith. She grew up on a farm in Fieldon Township, Watonwan County and attended Madelia community schools graduating in 1942. She enrolled at Macalester College in St. Paul and while attending there, she was among students recruited to work for the U.S. Army Signal Corp at Arlington Hall, in Arlington, Virginia during WWII. While in Arlington she met James Raymond Stringer of Meadowview, Virginia. They were married February 16, 1948 in Arlington Va. This union was blessed with four children. They resided in the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area until 1962, when they moved to rural Belle Plaine, Minnesota. As her children were growing up, Jean continued her education at Mankato State College and worked for several years for the Henderson School District. She was active in church, teaching adult Bible study and Sunday school, and served on numerous church committees. After retirement Jean and Ray enjoyed traveling, visiting every US state and traveling extensively abroad. A true believer in continuing education, they attended numerous Elder Hostels. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, gardening, and corresponding with many relatives and friends through letter writing. Following the passing of her husband in 1996, she moved to Burnsville in 1999 where she resided until fall of 2011 when she moved into Assisted Living in Shakopee. A devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed time together with her family, finding great pride and joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean is survived by her children, James of Burnsville, Nancy Grossmann of Lindstrom, Susan (Bruce) Volek of Belle Plaine, and David of Belle Plaine; eight grandchildren, Connor Stringer, Emily (Erik) Carlson, Laura (Travis) Greene, Stephanie (Garrett) Krona, Sara (Max) Addler, Kristin (Matt) Stier, Adam Volek, and Emma Stringer; 14 great-grandchildren, Grace and Joy Carlson, Jadon and Audrey Greene, Cody, Zoe and Karlee Krona; William, Greyson and Tate Addler, Kamryn and Kolin Stier and Ayden and Ansley Volek; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joe (Billie) Stringer, Beulah Stringer, Judy Stringer and Peggy Lester, all of Virginia and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray and her brother, Ralph Smith. Memorials are preferred to Heartland Hospice.
