Joseph Thomas Schommer

Joseph Thomas Schommer, age 97 of Belle Plaine, died Saturday, July 31, 2021 at his home in Jordan, MN.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4 at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine with Fr. Michael Kaluza officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to mass time at church.  Interment will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Belle Plaine.

Joe was born on December 11, 1923 to John and Elizabeth (Barten) Schommer on the family farm in Belle Plaine. He married June Schmidt on June 17, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shakopee.  They lived and farmed on the family farm where he grew up.  Along with farming he also worked as a lab technician and inspector for Midland Glass Company in Shakopee from 1964 to 1987.  Joe enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, and playing bingo.

He is survived by his children, Carolyn (Ron) Beckel of Apple River, IL, Ruth (Gary) Pedersen of Edina, Roger (Brenda) Schommer of New Prague, and Mary (Bob) Effertz of Belle Plaine; grandchildren, Heather (Mike) Connolly, Matthew (Jill) Beckel, Megan (Dan) Eveland, Sara (Adam) Sagedahl, and Joey (Sara) Effertz; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Nathan, and Alyssa Connolly, Charlie Beckel, William and Ryan Eveland, and Sophie, Evan, and Oliver Sagedahl; and other relatives and friends.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; wife, June in 1995; grandson, John Beckel; sisters, Genevieve Schommer, Mildred Schommer, Adeline Oelfke, and Marie Mader.
