Melvin J. Dose

Melvin J. Dose, age 92 of Arlington, died on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 7, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Arlington, MN. Visitation will be at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 a.m. ~ 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Matthew Rauh will officiate the services. Melvin was born on March 19, 1925 to Walter & Viola (Voight) Dose in Green Isle Township, Sibley County. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran Schools while growing up near Arlington. Melvin volunteered for service beginning in 1944. He received his basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. Melvin was a seaman first class with the Seabees in maintenance and regular labor on the U.S.S. Hanover. He was stationed on the Island of Guam. Melvin remembers upon reaching Guam, there was one big church and grass hut buildings. He worked on the ship unloading mostly sacks filled with cement for and airstrip that planned to build on the island of Guam. He was stationed on this island for 13 months. He remembers it taking 21 days to get to Guam. Homeward bound from his tour of duty took 23 days due to explosive mines in the waters placed by the Japanese. Melvin is proud to have served his country in the United States Navy. Melvin married Marcella Wendlandt on June 27, 1947 at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Penn Township, Sibley County. The couple lived and farmed near Arlington for 50 years and retired to town in 1997. Melvin was a long time member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and served as an Elder, Finance Committee and other church committees. He was also awarded the Sibley County Outstanding Senior Citizens Award. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marcella; children; Jeanne (Galen) Ribar of Arlington, MN; Leon (Renae) Dose of Arlington, MN; Harris (Linda) Dose of Arlington, MN; Sharon (Rick) Koepp of Arlington, MN and Joyce (Bryan) Koepp of Arlington, MN. 15 Grandchildren; Michelle (Brent) Bjerkness, Joel (Nina) Ribar, David (Rachel) Ribar, Chad (Megan) Dose, Scott (Kristi) Dose, Craig (Dana) Dose, Michael (Kim) Dose, Brad (Regan) Dose, Lisa (Dave) Wendinger, Lori (Tim) Eischens, Angela (Josh) Paggen, Mitchell (Megan) Koepp, Justin (Kelsey) Koepp, Tyler Koepp and Stephanie (Bryan) Lamont and 30 Great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister-in-Law, LaDonna Grochow of Gaylord, MN and brother-in-law, Lester Lindeman of Glencoe, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 infant great-granddaughters; Madeline & Sophia Eischens and sister, Norma (Darold) Neperman.
