Richard Martin Nieland, age 87 of Arlington, died on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center in Arlington. Memorial Services will be on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m, St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Arlington. Rev. Bruce Hanneman will be officiating the services. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Richard gifted his body to the University of Minnesota for research. Richard was born on August 22, 1923 to Henry and Caroline (Spannaus) Nieland in Arlington, MN. He grew up in Arlington and attended Arlington schools. He later served in the United States Army during World War II and Korea. He married Marion Meier on March 24, 1945 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Arlington. He farmed in the Arlington area and worked in the Post Office in Arlington. He moved to Chanhassen in 1974 continuing his work in postal service and returned to Arlington in 1995. He served on the City Council, served on Church Council and enjoyed volunteering his time with various activities and groups. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Arlington Good Samaritan Center. He is survived by his children, Beth Dahl of Prior Lake, MN, David H. (Karen) Nieland of Wausau, WI and Carol (Brad) Willmsen of Chanhassen, MN; Daughter-in-Law, Jackie Nieland of Coon Rapids, MN; 10 Grandchildren, Jeffrey (Aimee) Dahl, Suzie (John) Benedict, Lance (Bree) Nieland, Jackie (Canon) Pattillo, Dillon (Renee) Hicks, Matthew Nieland, Daniel, Neil, Paul & Scott Willmsen; Great-Grandchildren, Jake & Lilli Hicks and Jack Benedict; 2 Sisters, Evelyn Christianson and Marion Bagne; Brothers-in-Law, Ellsworth Meier and Donald (Gail) Meier; Sisters-in-Law, Mary Nieland and LaVonne Rosenwinkel. He is preceded in death by his wife, Marion; son, Richard F. Nieland and 3 brothers.
