Roman Robert Schmitz

Roman Robert Schmitz, age 48 of Belle Plaine, died Friday, July 26th, 2013. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Rev. Mark Johnson will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine and also one hour prior to service time at the church. Roman was born on November 5, 1964 to Richard and Claretta (Dohmen) Schmitz in New Prague. He went to New Prague schools and graduated in 1983. He then went into the Army where he served until 1986, and then remained in the reserves for the next 13 years. He met Schelly Voss in 1986 and they were married on September 5, 1987 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Roman loved playing euchre, having a few beers with friends, sitting out at the bonfire, watching Nascar, doing whatever he could to help others and spending time with his grandchildren. Roman is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Schelly; step-daughters, Jennifer Oestreich (fiancé, Garfield Bowen) and Laura Barfknecht (fiancé, Cody Gay); daughters, Amelia (Dale) Berry and Stephanie Schmitz (special friend, Nathan Milbrath); son, Matthew Schmitz; grandchildren, Jerald Barfknecht, Caleb and Zachary Oestreich and Claire Berry; his mother, Claretta Schmitz; sisters, Dorothy Wagner, Susan (Harvey) Andresen, Judy (Russell) Gebhardt and Alice (Bob) Nytes; brother, John (Cindy) Schmitz; sister-in-law, Sandy (Mark) Rassmussen; brother-in-law, Joe (Kathy) Voss; and aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Schmitz; father and mother-in-law, Marvin and Janet Voss; and the best friend any man could want, his dog, Molly.
