Doris Petzel Obituary

A memorial service for Doris is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 7th at Peace Lutheran Church in Arlington, with interment in the Arlington Public Cemetery. There will be no formal gathering of family and friends prior to the service. A catered lunch will be served following the interment. No donated food can be accepted at this time. Reduced capacity seating adhering to social distancing will be observed as well as the wearing of facial masks is now mandatory..

Doris Rose Petzel was born on March 14, 1933 in Arlington to Edward and Clara (Oldenburg) Pomplun. She was baptized on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord. Doris’ mother Clara passed away while Doris was a toddler. Doris’ father married Ella Oldenburg and Ella loved and raised Doris as her own. Doris was confirmed on March 30, 1947 at St. Paul’s of Gaylord. She married Earl Petzel on January 20, 1955 also at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Gaylord.

Doris and Earl made their home in rural Arlington where they farmed. The couple was blessed with four children; Virginia, Virgil, Kenneth and Barbara. The family moved to Montevideo to farm in 1963. In 1974 they moved to Dassel and then to Fairmont to run a motel for five years. They then moved to New Prague where they managed the Millpond Senior Citizens apartment complex until mid-1994. They moved to Gaylord and purchased the Gaylord Motel. They ran the motel together until Earl’s death in 1994. In 2001 Doris sold the motel and moved to the Annandale area to do in-home health care. She retired and returned to Arlington in 2005. She enjoyed living at Highland Commons, Fairview Assisted Living and finally made her home at Arlington Good Samaritan Society. Doris was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and had a very strong faith in God. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as gardening and animals.

Doris passed away on early Wednesday morning, March 18th at the Arlington Good Samaritan Society. She is survived by her children; Virginia (Dale) Wisch of Arlington, Virgil (Raquel) Petzel of Hutchinson and Kenneth Petzel of Welcome, grandchildren; Sophia Whims of Chanhassen, Nathan (Christine) Wisch of Hillman, Adam (Melinda) Wisch of Easton, Justin (Tara) Wisch of Brownton, Melissa Petzel (fiancé Joshua Rose) of Minneapolis and Casey Petzel of Chicago, IL., 17 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter, siblings; Marjorie Wagner, Linda (Gary) Hahn, LouAnn (Rodney) Lind, Roger (Geraldine) Pomplun, Richard (Sharon) Pomplun, Earl (Betty) Pomplun, Donald Pomplun and Steven Pomplun, sisters-in-law; Patricia Pomplun, Florence Petzel, Berdina Petzel and Irene Sickmann, many nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her husband Earl, parents; Edward, Clara and Ella Pomplun, daughter Barbara, grandson Brian Fry, grandson-in-law Robert Whims, brother Melvin Pomplun, parents-in-law Andy and Louisa Petzel, brothers-in-law David Wagner, Milo Petzel, LeRoy Petzel, Lorenz Grewe, Merrill Sickmann, sisters-in-law LuAnn Pomplun and Bernice Grewe.
