Dorothy Moriarty, age 100 of Belle Plaine, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. A private family-only Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. The funeral will be live-streamed at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 18th at ourladyoftheprairie.com.
Dorothy was born in Leeds, ND on May 31,1921 to Olaf and Louise Jensen. She grew up in Leeds until the age of 6 when her mother passed away. She moved to Wilson, WI and was adopted by her aunt and uncle Helga and Hans Steiro. Throughout her life, it was always important for Dorothy to stay connected with her seven birth siblings, and her seven adopted siblings. She graduated from Spring Valley High School. On October 9, 1944 she married John “Jack” Moriarty in San Luis Obispo, CA. After Jack’s military service in WWII ended, they lived in Minneapolis, and eventually moved to Crystal, MN. They resided in Crystal for 36 years, and then moved to Belle Plaine in 1985.
Over the years Dorothy worked as a bookkeeper at Our Own Hardware, Crystal State Bank and Ben Franklin to help support her family. She was also a marvelous seamstress, making and mending clothing for family and friends. She was devoted to her family. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her children and their spouses, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made valued and trusted lifelong friends in every place she worked and lived. She was loved and cherished by so many.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Mary (Denny) of Belle Plaine, Tim (Marilyn) of Victoria, and John (Lynne) of Minneapolis. Grandchildren, Shannon, Katie, Pat, Kevin, Molly, Sara, Erin, Megan and Kelly. Great Grandchildren, JP, Kellen, Ryan, Ella, Aiden, Max, Claire, Nolan, Bryce, Jack and Charlie.
