Elmer was born March 2, 1930 in Blakely, MN to Frank and Anna (Mueller) Sellnow.  Elmer grew up on the farm in Blakeley and was the youngest of nine children.  He attended Blakeley school through grade 8 and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1948. After a short stint in farming, he worked for many years at Thermo King, Westerman Lumber, Norwesco and Mammoth, mainly specializing in sheet metal work.

Elmer enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards with family and friends. He was delighted whenever there was a large family gathering.  He also was talented with woodworking, making many pieces for family and friends.  He was a life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine, baptized on March 30, 1930 and confirmed on May 23, 1943 and served in several capacities and as an usher for over 40 years.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Wanda; sons Ron (Barb) of Bloomington, MN; Dave (Denni) of Hubertus, WI; Tom (Janet) of Belle Plaine, MN; Larry (Lynn) of Montello, WI: Jeff (Annette) of Burnsville, MN; and Mark (Sue) of Bloomington, MN; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Joanne Harms.
