Francis “Fran” Huber, age 94 of Belle Plaine, died on Saturday, December 22, at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 27 at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. Visitation will be two hours prior to the Mass at church. Interment with military honors will be in Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery in Belle Plaine.
Francis was born in Belle Plaine on May 21, 1924 to Frank and Margaret (Luskey) Huber.
He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1942. Soon after graduating he was enlisted into the U.S. Army. He married Leona Schmidt on June 6, 1951 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. The majority of his life was spent working at the downtown Huber’s Red Owl grocery store. He later became co-owner of the store. Fran was able to retire at the age of 55, which didn’t slow him down. He then began driving truck for the Co-Op in Belle Plaine.
He was active in his church, serving as an Usher for many years. He was a member of the KC’s, Hibernians, VFW, and also helped his wife with Meals on Wheels.
Fran was an avid sports fan, loving all things sports. In his retirement years he enjoyed golfing, and at the age of 80 received his first Hole-in-One. He also loved working on jigsaw puzzles.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona in 2005; son, Robert in 2018; and brothers, Mark, Arthur and John Huber.
Fran is survived by his daughter, Jeanne (Paul) Anderson of Canby, MN;
granddaughter, Kirstin (Brandon) Girard of Brookings, SD; great-grandsons, Matthew, Cameron and Rory Girard; brother, Jim Huber of Canby;
sister, Mary (Graham) Jaros of East China, MI;
sister-in-law, Ivona “Toy” Huber of Belle Plaine; and many nieces and nephews.
