Obituary

 

Harlan Anton Laabs, age 87 of Belle Plaine passed away on May 12, 2023 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living in Jordan. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 20th at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Visitation will be two hours prior to service time Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Belle Plaine with military rites provided by the Belle Plaine Veterans Honor Guard.

Harlan was born on November 2, 1935 in Belle Plaine Township, Scott County to Anton and Alvina (Holste) Laabs. Harlan was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church. On May 11, 1957 Harlan was united in marriage to Leona Krenz at St. John Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. They were blessed with four children. Harlan and Leona lived in town in Belle Plaine the first four years before moving to the family farm in Belle Plaine Township in June of 1961 when they took over the farming operation. Harlan served in the National Guard for six years and received his Honorable Discharge on March 7, 1962. When they lived in town Harlan was a milk can hauler, hauling milk to the Belle Plaine Creamery. Harlan loved to farm and worked very hard at it. He loved playing cards, going to dances, fishing, camping, spending time with family and friends, and later after retiring from farming, loved spending time at their cabin in Glenwood, MN.

Harlan is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law; Debra and Jon Luedloff of Norwood Young America, Lori Jeurissen of Shakopee and special friend John Jagoe, and Lisa and Tim Murphy of Belle Plaine. Grandchildren and their spouses; Melissa and Brandon Meuleners, Bradley and Megan Jeurissen, Nicholas and Bri Jeurissen, Tony Murphy, and Katie Murphy. Great grandchildren; Fynnley Murphy, Tinsley Murphy, and Ella Jeurissen. Sister-in-law; Alverna Laabs and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Harlan is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leona, son Brian, sisters and brothers-in-law; Arvilla and Clarence Noll, Mabel and Warren Bessel, Delores and Orville Ruehling, Bernice and Joe Meger, brothers and sister-in-law; Gerhard Laabs, and Willard and Joyce Laabs.

Casket bearers are: Virgil Noll, David Bessel, Larry Ruehling, Steve Meger, Richard Laabs and Cameron Laabs.
