Joseph Paul Thomes

Joseph P. Thomes, age 93 of Arlington, MN, died on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at The Good Samaritan Society in Arlington, MN. Mass of Christian burial will be on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Arlington, MN. Visitation will be at the Kolden Funeral Home in Arlington on Monday, July 19, from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue the morning of the Mass at the Funeral Home from 9:00 a.m. - 10:15 a.m. We will then process to the church for the 10:30 a.m. Mass.  Burial will be with Military Honors at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Arlington.

Joseph was born on September 14, 1927 to Alexander and Agatha (Kreger) Thomes in Arlington, MN. He grew up in Arlington and attended Arlington Schools. He served in the United States Army after World War II, serving in Korea. After returning home he got a degree from the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis and later married Maxine Steffer at St. Mary’s Basilica in Minneapolis, MN. The couple lived in Arlington, MN where Joe worked at Thomes Hardware with his siblings. Joe sold and serviced a lot of appliances. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and Arlington Baseball Board Assoc. He enjoyed fishing as well as water sports when he was younger. Joe was also an avid fan of grilling. He especially enjoyed his time with family and friends.

He is survived by his children; Lynn (Jack) Shimota of Minnetonka; Greg (Gail) Thomes of Chaska, MN;  Jeff (Judy) Thomes of Rogers, MN and Paul (Joan) Thomes of Chaska, MN. 11 Grandchildren and 10 Great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maxine in 2001; siblings; Karl Thomes, Josephine “Sis” Gilhausen, Rita Melsha, Helen “Shorty” Brau, and Ralph Thomes.
