Martin Walsh Obituary

Martin “Marty” Gordon Walsh, age 27, of Belle Plaine, died unexpectedly on March 13, 2020, near Jordan, MN.  Due to the onset of COVID-19 virus, memorial services were delayed.  Restrictions have been loosened and a Celebration of Marty’s Life will take place at the Union Square Park(BBQ Days Park)  on Sunday, September 13, 2020 at 1pm.  A short service will begin at 1:30. An open microphone will be available for the sharing of memories. Prepared remarks will also be read.

Martin was born on June 12, 1992 in Southbend, IN. to James and Michelle Carter.  John and Rhonda (Oxborrow) Walsh of Belle Plaine, MN met him several hours after his birth and cared for him until their adoption was completed.   Martin was their sunshine in the days and years that followed. He was a loving big brother and faithful son.  He was active in his community, church and school.  He worked as a lifeguard and WSI instructor as a teenager.  Martin later began working at Hope Residence, where he found his true calling caring for individuals with disabilities. Martin became an Eagle Scout, it is through those scouting experiences that his love for the outdoors was fostered.  He was active in band and jazz band where he played the trumpet and trombone. He played taps at his Grandmother Fran’s funeral at her request to make sure there was not a dry eye in the room.  He had a passion for the piano and was known as the “Piano Man” by his family. Martin was active on the Cross Country and Track team throughout his high school athletic career.  A high light was going to State Track Meet and taking 2nd place in the 4X4.  Marty was a member of the Tiger Target Team.  Following high school, Martin served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Buenos Aires, AR through November 2011-November 2013. Upon his return he worked for Ames Construction, but after a year returned to Hope Residence as a Direct Support Professional and Trained Medication Aide. It is at Hope where Martin found joy through serving and caring for his residents.  Martin had recently became a first responder and was pursuing further education to become an EMT to continue his life of service. On August 8, 2015, Martin married Michelle Burnett (Peterson) in Arlee, Montana.  They began their life together with stepsons Gavin and Blake and daughter Maylee, who Martin later adopted.

Martin was known for his love of fishing, agate hunting, hiking and anything that involved outdoor activities.  He was always there as a friend to the friendless.  His quiet strength made him a natural leader.  He was a dutiful and loving husband and father, a devoted son and a supportive brother.  His influence is greatly missed in the lives of many.

Marty is survived by his wife, Michelle.  Children:  Gavin and Blake Peterson and Maylee Walsh.  Siblings Mitchell Walsh of Belle Plaine, Mariah (Peter) Joseph of Twentynine Palms, CA and Marcus Walsh of Mankato, MN.  Parents, John and Rhonda Walsh of Belle Plaine, MN and maternal grandmother, Dora Oxborrow of Afton. MN.  Biological Family James and Michelle Carter, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Gordon Oxborrow and paternal grandparents, Martin and Frances (Cunningham) Walsh.

Martin is remembered everyday with a hope of happy reunion through the victory over death and sin by Jesus Christ, his Redeemer.
