Paul Sweeney, age 102 of LeSueur, Minnesota died on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at the Oak Terrace Senior Living in LeSueur. He was born on August 25, 1920 in St. Mary’s Township in Waseca County to Charles and Regina (Cox) Sweeney. He attended school in New Richland, Minnesota. Paul entered the U. S. Army-Air Corp at the age of 20. Paul was a tail gunner in a B-17 bomber plane which was shot down by German aircraft near Enden, Germany on September 27, 1943. He was captured by the Germans and became a POW & Missing in Action for 20 months. He received the Purple Heart. He married Ellen Callahan on June 27, 1945 at All Saint’s Catholic Church in New Richland. He farmed for many years at Sauk Center, Scott County and later in Tyrone Township, LeSueur County. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, card games, traveling and reading.
He is survived by his son-in-law; Bill (Kay) Brown, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Brown in 2004 and his wife, Ellen in 2013, infant son and siblings. His family thanks the staff of Oak Terrace for their loving care of Paul.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, October 1, 2022, 10:30 AM at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in LeSueur. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass. Lunch will be served following the Mass at St. Anne’s School. Interment will be in the St. Thomas Church Cemetery at St. Thomas with Military Honors following the lunch. Memorials may be made to St. Anne’s School.
