Paul Joseph Zimmerman

Paul Joseph Zimmerman, 83, died September 1, 2020, at the Benedictine Senior Living Community in Saint Peter, MN.  Private family services will be held at a future date.

Paul was born July 26, 1937 in Greensburg, PA, to John W. and Alice (Mates) Zimmerman. He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1955. He enlisted in the Air Force and trained as an Air Traffic Controller. After completing his service Paul joined the Pennsylvania State Police and was stationed in Corry, PA for two years. On July 22, 1962 Paul met Dorothy Chapel of Titusville, PA. They were married on March 9, 1963. In 1962 he was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller, a career that he greatly enjoyed until his retirement in 1994.

In retirement Paul stayed active with his many interests. Moving to TN, he volunteered with groups for home repairs and became a Red Cross volunteer. At 9/11, Paul spent three weeks serving food to rescue workers near Ground Zero. He also developed his talents for art and produced many paintings in a variety of mediums; enjoyed wood working and carpentry; and spent many happy hours fly-fishing in the Holston River in TN.

In 2015, having lost his eyesight and in the early stages of dementia, Paul and Dorothy entered assisted living in Saint Peter, MN.

Paul is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; daughters Lori (Jim) King of LeSueur, MN and Susan (TJ) Marks of Grapevine, TX; grandchildren Paul and Adam Marks and Sarah and David King; brother John; brother-in-law Ken Bierce; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, sister Loretta, mother- and father- in-law; and sisters-in-law Nora Zimmerman and Jane Bierce.

The family is grateful to the staffs of Benedictine and Mayo Hospice for their care and compassion.
