Roger Laabs Obituary

Roger A. Laabs, age 87 of Le Sueur, died with his wife and family at his bedside, at Mayo Health Systems in Mankato on Thursday evening, April 16, 2020.  Due to the restrictions with the CDC and Dept. of Health, services will be at a later time. 

Roger was born on May 17, 1932 in New Prague, Minnesota.  He grew up on a farm in rural Belle Plaine where he attended and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1950.  He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine, and shared his life, confirmation, school and graduation with his sweetheart and future wife Marilyn Latzke.  The couple married July 28, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine shortly after Roger returned from bootcamp from the United States Navy. He served during the Korean War and returned home in 1955 were he and Marilyn lived in Belle Plaine until the Fall of 1955 and they moved to Le Sueur.  Roger worked for Le Sueur Electric with George Prahl for several years before embarking on a long career of a variety of professions and skilled work, (plumbing, excavating, manufacturing, repairs and fabrication). His last job was Maintenance Supervisor for the Le Sueur School System. The couple moved to St. Peter in 2010 and active at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter.  They moved to Oak Terrace in Le Sueur in October of 2018. Roger's enjoyments were Twins games, camping, woodworking, reading, painting and puzzles. He enjoyed time with his family and friends and very proud of his U.S. Navy Service.  

He is survived by his wife of 68 years Marilyn; children, Diane (Avram) Yehoshua of Flagstaff, AZ; Robert (Barbara) Laabs of Cottage Grove, MN; Joane (Jeff) Kerkow of Livingston, TX and John (Sarah) Laabs of Chanhassen, MN.  8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Siblings; David (Shirley) Laabs of Jordan, MN and Ruth Andersen of San Diego, CA. Brother-in-law; Myron Latzke of Belle Plaine, MN.

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Shery Laabs in 1975 and parents, Arthur and Mabel Laabs.
